How to Choose a Web Design Agency: The Questions to Ask Before You Sign

A checklist for evaluating any web design agency — ownership, SEO specifics, measurable results, and post-launch support — from a founder who'd rather you ask hard questions than assume.

Before hiring any web design agency, ask five things directly: who owns the domain, hosting, code, and analytics after launch; what exactly “SEO” includes; whether they can show live client websites, not screenshots; what happens after launch, not just at launch; and how they measure success. If the answers are vague, that’s the answer.

Most guides to “choosing an agency” are written by agencies trying to sound impressive. This one is written by an agency that would rather you go in with sharp questions — including the questions that make us work harder to earn your business.

1. Who owns what, after launch?

This is the question most businesses forget to ask until it’s a problem. Make sure you — not the agency — own:

  • The domain
  • The hosting account
  • The website code
  • The CMS login
  • Analytics (Google Analytics, etc.)
  • Google Search Console
  • Google Business Profile

If an agency can’t give you a straight “yes, all of it, from day one” answer, you don’t own your own business’s front door. At Vroq, every account and asset is handed over at launch — you’re never locked into us to keep your own website running.

2. What does “SEO” actually mean, in their proposal?

“SEO” on a proposal can mean anything from “we added a meta title” to a genuine ongoing strategy. Ask specifically whether it includes:

  • Keyword research and mapping
  • Technical SEO (site speed, crawlability, structured data)
  • On-page optimisation
  • Local SEO and Google Business Profile setup
  • Content strategy
  • Ongoing, monthly work — or a one-time setup

There’s a real difference between an SEO-ready website (the technical foundation is correct at launch) and ongoing SEO (someone is actively working the rankings every month). Most agencies sell the first and imply the second. Ask which one you’re buying.

3. Ask for live websites, not screenshots

A portfolio page shows you the agency’s best angle. A live site shows you the truth. Open three of their recent projects on your phone and check:

  • Does it load fast?
  • Is it easy to use with one thumb?
  • Is there a clear call to action above the fold?
  • Would you trust this business based on the page alone?

If an agency hesitates to hand over live links, that’s worth noticing.

4. What happens in month two?

Launch day is the easy part. The harder, more honest question is what the agency does after the invoice is paid. Ask:

  • Is there a support window, and how long?
  • Who do you contact if something breaks?
  • Is there a plan for ongoing SEO, content, or optimisation — or does the relationship end at handover?

An agency that treats launch as the finish line will leave your site to stall the moment it goes live.

5. How do they define success?

If the answer is “a beautiful website,” be cautious. If the answer includes specifics — enquiries, calls, bookings, rankings, response time to your feedback — that’s a business-minded agency, not just a design shop.

No agency can honestly guarantee leads from a website alone

Be skeptical of anyone who promises otherwise. Leads depend on your market, your offer, your pricing, your competition, and your follow-up — not the website in isolation. A good agency builds the strongest possible foundation and is upfront about what’s outside its control. One that promises guaranteed results regardless of those factors is telling you what you want to hear, not what’s true.

Where Vroq stands on all of this

We’re a young, founder-led studio — one real, verifiable case study, not a wall of screenshots. We’d rather you ask us every question on this list than take our word for it. You’ll always own your domain, hosting, code, and accounts. Our pricing page spells out exactly what’s included at each tier, and our FAQ answers the ownership and accountability questions above directly, in writing.

If you want to run this checklist against us specifically, start a conversation — we’d rather earn the business than assume it.
