What 'SEO' Actually Includes (And What to Ask Before You Pay for It)
SEO can mean a five-minute meta title edit or a genuine ongoing strategy. Here's what real SEO includes — keyword research, technical SEO, local SEO, and content — and what's a one-time setup vs. ongoing work.
“SEO” on an invoice can mean anything from adding a page title to a full ongoing strategy — and the gap between those two things is the gap between a website that ranks and one that quietly sits on page four of Google forever. Here’s what real SEO breaks down into, so you know exactly what you’re paying for.
The building blocks of real SEO
Keyword research and mapping. Identifying what your customers actually type into Google — “dentist near me,” not “premium oral healthcare solutions” — and mapping each page of your site to the terms it should rank for.
Technical SEO. The unglamorous plumbing: fast load times, mobile usability, clean crawlable code, correct sitemaps, structured data (schema markup) so Google and AI answer engines can understand exactly what your business is and does.
On-page optimisation. Titles, headings, meta descriptions, image alt text, and internal linking — done deliberately around your keyword map, not left to whatever a template auto-generates.
Local SEO. Google Business Profile setup and optimisation, consistent business information (name, address, phone) across the web, and the local ranking signals that get you into the map pack when someone searches your category in your city.
Content strategy. Ongoing pages, posts, or guides that build topical authority over time — the reason some sites keep climbing months after launch while others plateau.
Backlinks and authority. Other credible sites linking to yours. This is the slowest-moving and hardest-to-fake piece, and it’s where a one-time setup fundamentally cannot compete with sustained effort.
One-time setup vs. ongoing SEO — know which one you’re buying
An SEO-ready website means the technical foundation, on-page structure, and local setup are correct at launch. This is a one-time job, and it should be included in any properly built website, not sold as a separate add-on.
Ongoing SEO means someone is actively working your rankings every month — new content, new backlinks, tracking what’s moving and adjusting. This is a continuous service, not a one-time deliverable, and it should be priced and reported on as one.
Ask any agency directly: “Is this a one-time SEO foundation, or an ongoing monthly service?” If they can’t answer clearly, assume it’s the former and price accordingly.
What no honest agency can promise
Nobody can guarantee a #1 Google ranking — that’s Google’s algorithm, not any agency’s product. Be wary of anyone who promises a specific position or a specific traffic number. What a good agency can guarantee is the right technical and structural foundation, and honest reporting on what’s actually moving.
How this works at Vroq
Every complete online presence system includes the SEO foundation — keyword mapping, technical SEO, on-page optimisation, and local SEO / Google Business Profile setup — built in at launch, not bolted on afterward. Ongoing content and monthly optimisation are part of the optional Care Plan, reported monthly, so you always know what’s a one-time build and what’s continuous work.
